Red-capped Manakin
Birds from Panama May 25th, 2008
The Red-capped Manakin (Pipra mentalis) is a species of bird in the Pipridae family. It is found from Mexico all the way to Panama and Colombia. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
The bird is probably best known for the male’s unusual courting method whereby it shuffles rapidly backwards across a branch, akin to a speedy Moonwalk. The attached photo of this Red-capped Manakin was taken along the Pipeline Road in Panama.
