The herons are wading birds in the Ardeidae family. Some are called egrets or bitterns instead of herons.

Although herons resemble birds in some other families, such as the storks, ibises and spoonbills, they differ from these in flying with their necks retracted, not outstretched. They are also one of the bird groups that have powder down.

The members of this family are mostly associated with wetlands, and prey on fish, frogs and other aquatic species.

Las garzas son una familia de aves zancudas de la familia Ardeidae, que abarca más de 60 especies, entre ellas los huacos (Nycticorax nycticorax) y los mirasoles o avetoros (Botaurini).

Llegan a medir entre 70 y 85 cm de alto, su plumaje en blanco con el pico de color amarillo y con largas patas grises, aunque su plumaje varía según la estación del año. Se alimentan de peces, crustáceos y pequeños anfibios, y tienen como hábitat las zonas pantanosas o cercanas a los lagos de todo el continente americano.
